About POLPAN

The Polish Panel Survey POLPAN is an academic research project, which was initiated in 1988 by the employees and research partners of the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of Polish Academy of Sciences. The POLPAN research team – headed by prof. Kazimierz M. Slomczynski – represents different theoretical and methodological approaches.

The main areas of interest of POLPAN study include:

  • Social mobility;
  • Old and new elements in the social structure;
  • Processes of adaptation to the market economy;
  • Winners and losers in the context of systemic changes and integration with the EU;
  • Social and political attitudes;
  • Changes in the class structure;
  • Inequality of living conditions;
  • The role of social position for social attitudes and political behaviors;
  • Perception of social cleavages and conflicts;
  • Health issues;
  • Emigration.

A unique feature of panel research is that the same respondents are interviewed about their living conditions and options at regular time intervals – every five years in the case of POLPAN. In each consecutive wave, new respondents, who represent younger generations, are recruited and added to the sample. POLPAN is the oldest Polish study of its kind.
