During the POLPAN Seminar on February 2nd Dr. Nataliia Pohorila (Research center SOCIS, Ukraine) will present a paper titled “Positive, Negative, and Neutral Opinions about the European Union: Does the Historical Context Matter?”
Abstract:
The paper explores the impact of aspirations to access the EU before the 2004 on evaluation of the individual gains after the EU accession. POLPAN data are used to define the positive, negative and neutral opinions about the EU for the periods 1998-2003 and 2003-2008 and examine the effects of constructed variables. The presence of historical context is reported, though the coefficients are relatively small. The effect of the context seems to be changing in time and vary for different types of attitudes. Age and perception of country’s economy and politics matter across the historical and local contexts.
