NORPOL Project

The project „Trends and Reconfigurations in Polish Public Thought” (NORPOL) was carried out from 2003 to 2005. It was directed by sociologists from: University of Tromsø and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Norway, the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Science, the Institute for Political Studies of the Polish Academy of Science, and The Polish Public Opinion Research Center (CBOS). The team was lead by Professor Albert Simkus (University of Tromsø) and comprised: Professor Kristen Ringdal, Professor Kazimierz M. Slomczynski, Professor Krzysztof Zagorski, and Professor Bogdan W. Mach.

The goal of the project was to analyze longterm changes in Polish attitudes. Particular emphasis was placed on attitudes toward democracy, political ideology, socialism, and equality.

The project comprised three parts:

(1) Supporting the preparation of research tools and pre-tests for the third wave of a large Polish national panel survey, today called POLPAN. The funding for continuing the study was co-funded by both the Research Council of Norway and the Polish government;

(2) Studying the consistency of people’s answers to attitude scales across short periods of one month to one year. Various attitude scales were developed and tested for reliability, and finally used in a large national sample of over 4000 adults;

(3) Analyzing trends taken from large databases of the time-series of CBOS public opinion polls from 1992 through 2006. This part of the study was carried out by CBOS.
