During the POLPAN Seminar on November 25th, 2025, Dr. Nataliia Pohorila (Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw) and Yuriy Taran (Educational Research Institute) presented on ‘Religiosity, Authoritarianism, and Nationalistic Views in Poland’.
Abstract:
This paper examines the effect of personal religiosity on nationalist attitudes in 2023. We hypothesize that this effect is positive and is amplified by the authoritarian tendencies of religious individuals, as the theory of religious nationalism suggests. Our hypothesis was tested using the 2018 and 2023 waves of POLPAN. The analysis provides weak but significant confirmation of our hypothesis. Both religiosity and authoritarianism influence nationalist attitudes; authoritarianism has a more substantial effect than religiosity.
